Freight train derails east of Flagstaff, closes tracks indefinitely
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) reports a derailed freight train has closed both main tracks east of Flagstaff early Monday morning.
The train had 14 cars derail at 6:14 a.m., said Lena Kent, BNSF spokeswoman, through email. No one was injured, and no chemicals were spilled, Kent said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The track is currently closed, and officials do not know when the track is expected to reopen. An Arizona Daily Sun reporter responded to the scene and found the trail derailed near Angell Road, a few miles away from Twin Arrows casino.
BNSF trucks, semi-trucks, a crane and crunched cargo containers could be seen on the ground next to the rails surrounded by juniper trees.
The derailed train has stopped trains going both ways along the stretch of track connecting Los Angeles to Chicago. Freight and passenger trains can be seen stationary along both sides of the derailed freight train.
Amtrak has reportedly enlisted buses to help with moving passengers impacted by the rail closure, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods.
