ALG Connect Weather Alert: Snowstorm to Spread from Ohio Valley to the Appalachians

Snowstorm to Spread from Ohio Valley to the Appalachians and Interior Northeast through Tuesday

Snow from a fast-moving weather system will contribute to travel headaches as it continues to spread toward the Ohio Valley, Appalachians and interior Northeast later Monday into Tuesday. The storm has blanketed areas from central Iowa to northern Illinois and southern Lower Michigan with 3 to 5 inches of snow. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport picked up 3.4 inches of snow.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service from portions of the Midwest to the interior Northeast. Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Detroit are among the cities under a winter weather advisory. Burlington, Vermont and Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York, are under a winter storm warning for more significant snow accumulations.

Monday night, will become heavier from western and central New York to northern New England. Some freezing rain and sleet are possible on the southern edge of that snow area. Rain will change to a quick round of freezing rain, sleet, and then snow into parts of the Tennessee Valley and Appalachians Monday night, making for potentially challenging travel. The typical lake-effect snowbelts southeast of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie will pick up locally higher snowfall totals - over 10 inches in some spots.
