ALG Connect Weather Alert: Winter Storm Closes Numerous Interstates

Winter Storm Closes Numerous Interstates in Colorado, Wyoming; Hundreds Stranded Overnight Inside Denver Airport

A pre-Thanksgiving snowstorm is hammering the Front Range of the Rockies and will spread toward the upper Midwest with wind-driven snow into Wednesday.

The snowstorm, which has been named Winter Storm Dorothy by The Weather Channel, led to large shutdowns of numerous interstates, including two of the most traveled in eastern Colorado. Interstate 70 was closed in both directions Tuesday morning from Airpark Road east of the Denver metro all the way to Burlington - a closure of about 150 miles - according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

In northeastern Colorado, I-76 was closed in both directions from Lochbuie to the Nebraska state line, affecting more than 150 miles of roadway.

The Denver metro area has already picked up 7 to 12 inches of snow. Western sections of Boulder, Colorado, have seen up to 20.5 inches. The top storm total so far is 31.7 inches about 11 miles southeast of Estes Park, Colorado.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service from the Front Range of the Rockies east and northeastward into the Central Plains and upper Midwest. Winter storm warnings include the Denver metro area, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Sioux City, Iowa, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. A blizzard warning is in effect for a small part of southeastern Wyoming and northeast Colorado (east and northeast of Denver).
