ALG Connect: Hurricane Lee Nearing New England, Canada with Strong Winds, Rain, Coastal Flooding

Hurricane Lee Nearing New England, Canada with Strong Winds, Rain, Coastal Flooding

Hurricane Lee continues to draw closer to New England and Atlantic Canada, where it will unleash strong winds, rain and coastal flooding far from its center later Friday into the weekend.  Lee is also producing rip currents and high surf along much of the East Coast, providing another example of how hurricanes can be a danger for beachgoers far away from where a storm is tracking.

Lee is a large hurricane centered 300+ miles south-southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and is moving to the north-northeast. Lee is now a Category 1, but that's not as much of an attention-grabber as its size. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend out up to 320 miles. That's a large wind field for a hurricane.

Rainfall from Lee is mostly offshore right now, but winds have begun to increase some in Nantucket. A 41mph gust was reported there early Friday afternoon. A tropical storm warning has been issued from Westport, Massachusetts, northward to the Canadian border, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket.

We recognize the severe impact that current conditions are having on our customers, and we are committed to restoring service levels as quickly as possible.
