Winter Storm Lorraine: Hundreds of Flights Canceled, Major School Closures

Winter Storm Lorraine is on track to become a nor'easter as it nears the East Coast, which happens when a strong area of low pressure features winds from the northeast off the Atlantic Ocean.

Schools are closed in major cities including Boston and New York, hundreds of flights are canceled, and drivers warned of hazardous conditions as a winter storm batters the Northeast.

Some snowfall updates from weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman:

-It’s still snowing at a rate of 1 inch per hour at both LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports.

-Fifteen inches of snow have now fallen in Shohola, Pennsylvania.

-There’s one report of 3.2 inches of snow in the north Philly suburb of Wyndmoor.

-Up to 11 inches has fallen in the Hartford, Connecticut, area.

Pennsylvania authorities have announced the closure of a section of Interstate 81. The closure affects the northbound lanes at mile marker 29 in Southampton Township. This decision comes after multiple vehicles crashed or were stranded due to the weather conditions, according to WHP-TV. This stretch of highway is a crucial artery for travelers heading toward Harrisburg or cities farther north like Scranton. Heavy snow was falling this morning in the northeastern corner of New Jersey. Areas nearby had received anywhere between 2 and 5.5 inches of snow so far.
