Hurricane Milton Live Updates: 3 Million Lose Power; Tornado Outbreak Turns Deadly

Hurricane Milton is far from done with Florida despite a long night of extreme winds and storm surge that left widespread damage. Before Milton made landfall Wednesday night, it spawned more than a dozen tornadoes, at least one of which was blamed for the storm's first deaths.

Milton’s center is moving away from the east coast of Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported. It has been downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane.

All hurricane and tropical storm warnings are discontinued on the state’s west coast but remain in effect for much of Florida’s east-central coast. Storm surge warnings remain in effect for areas of the state’s east coast up to Altamaha Sound, Georgia. The storm will continue to move away from the peninsula and head north of the Bahamas.

Fire and emergency services were halted, millions were without power, streets and homes were flooded, and power lines and trees knocked down as Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night on Florida's West Coast.

The storm roared ashore in the Sarasota County community of Siesta Key, home to pricey houses and condos, daiquiri bars, and beaches often ranked among the best in the U.S. The area just south of Tampa Bay was under a mandatory evacuation order ahead of the storm, and residents countywide were told to shelter in place as Milton moved in.
