First Winter Storm for Parts of Interior Northeast Brings Heavy Snow from Pennsylvania to Maine

A winter storm, named Winter Storm Chan by The Weather Channel, has arrived in the Northeast bringing some their first snow of the season, and a heavy snow threat from Pennsylvania to Maine. So far, the deepest snow has fallen in central Indiana and central Ohio, where 6-7 inches have fallen. Rushville, Indiana, just east of Indianapolis, picked up almost 7 inches of snow.

A stretch of real estate from the Central Plains through the upper Ohio Valley and interior Northeast have picked up from 1 to 5 inches of snow. That includes the Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Columbus and Pittsburgh metro areas. Slippery roads and jammed up traffic were reported in the Indianapolis metro Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Snow Forecast

Timing

Expect continued slippery travel Tuesday in areas of the Midwest where snow has already fallen, especially early in the day.

The Northeast will see the bulk of its snow Tuesday, with some lingering snow in parts of western and northern New England on Tuesday night. This could lead to challenging travel in these areas, with snow-covered roads still lingering in the Wednesday morning commute.

In addition to the snow, some strong wind gusts are possible along coastal eastern New England late Tuesday into Wednesday morning as this brief nor'easter tracks toward Atlantic Canada. That could also lead to some minor coastal flooding during early Wednesday morning's high tide in eastern Massachusetts, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

The storm may also strengthen just fast enough to be called a bomb cyclone, but not until it's headed toward the Canadian Maritimes, focusing most of its bigger wind impacts there.

Totals

In the Northeast, heaviest snow amounts of 6 inches or more are possible from the Poconos of northeast Pennsylvania to just up the Hudson Valley from New York City into parts of western and northern New England. Some localized amounts up to a foot are possible from parts of Massachusetts well west of downtown Boston to southern Vermont, New Hampshire and southern Maine.
